DENE SITE
Our Dene village site is a 18' x 20' spruce log home and nearby food cache based on those from the Eklutna Dena’ina Athabascan area whose Elder builders included Leo Stephan.
Dene pole and log dwellings were like historic log cabins that they later adopted. In colder areas, the homes were sunk two to five feet into the ground. On the ocean-moderated shores of the Cook Inlet, the Dene built log houses above ground. They slept in the back areas and used the front part for cooking and drying. Dene peoples developed complex storage technologies to protect supplies from bears and rodents and invading tribes, and a food cache was a critical feature of most camps, especially near winter dwellings.
