Plan your classroom visit to the Alaska Native Heritage Center. Students explore the past and present of Alaska's eleven indigenous cultures in a traditional setting under the guidance of Alaska Native instructors.

“Keeping the Fire in the Dark Moon Times”

Morning 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. OR Afternoon 12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
NOTE: No lunches are permitted at the Center during this week.
Students watch a performance by professional actors and singers from Alaska, Massachusetts, and Hawai’i, representing Yup’ik, Inupiaq, Hawaiian, Wampanoag, and Cape Verdean cultures. The production weaves together the ancestral stories, dance, and music of the three regions through the universal symbolism of the moon. This visit does not include the film, art project or a village site tour.

Customized School Visit

10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. (2.5 hours)

This program allows for endless possibilities including:

  • Your choice of film and program.
  • A specialized tour that fits your class’s current interest, such as architecture, environment, oral tradition, hunting and gathering, clothing or traditional watercraft.
  • Your choice of one of Alaska’s eleven Native cultures and see the related film, stories, dance and art.

Summer Season Visit

9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
This program is an unguided field trip to the Center for up to a full day.
Students may take part in scheduled tours along with other guests, or for an additional fee have a special guided tour. We suggest that teachers design a “visitors’ guide” for students to follow during their field trip. Food is available for purchase at the Center.
